Angelus Calendar - February: The Virtue of Hope
by Benjamin Bielinski
As the heart desires the spring of living water, so my soul desires to leave the prison of this dark body and see in truth.” -St. Catherine of Siena
We as Catholics know that hope is a constant of our daily lives if we are to love God. From the moment we wake we are faced with the duality of our sins and the presence of God’s love. Even though we strive for perfection and our sins seem to be ever present. How then is it possible to achieve the virtue of Hope? It is not in apathy or complicity. Sin is not a reality that we accept but a privation that we seek to correct by striving to draw ever closer to God through sacrifice and prayer.
“For we are saved by hope. But hope that is seen is not hope. For what a man seeth, why doth he hope for? But if we hope for that which we see not, we wait for it with patience” (Rom. 8:24-25).
Holy hope grounds us in the merciful love of God and His most sacred Mother. God is always present.
His grace - always sufficient!
The virtue of hope gives us the certitude that some day we will see our God, that we will possess Him and will be united to Him forever. Hope presents God to us as our infinite good and our eternal reward. Our hope is sure when it is founded not on ourselves, but on God, on His infinite goodness, on His salvific will which desires “all men to be saved”, and on His sanctifying will that wants us not only to be saved, but also to be saints: “This is the will of God, your sanctification.”
