Angelus Calendar January: Virtue of Faith
"I will go peaceably and firmly to the Catholic Church: for if faith is so important to our salvation, I will seek it where true faith first began, seek it among those who received it from God Himself." - St. Elizabeth Ann Seton
This year the Angelus Press Calendar is especially focused on spiritual growth. As the year progresses and time passes it is all too easy for each of us to lose sight of the progress we could be making in the spiritual life. With this in mind, each month of the 2019 calendar is devoted to a new virtue. For this first month of January our focus is the the virtue of faith.
Faith being a theological virtue is not something that we can increase ourselves but rather we can only dispose ourselves for God to increase this virtue in us. We do this by making acts of faith. "Lord, increase our faith!" (Lk. 17:5) In times when it is difficult for us to persevere in prayer or even if we are tempted to doubt the truths of our holy religion, we can make acts of faith. Belief is not a feeling so we should not base our faith on the amount of sensible devotion that we have and lose our peace if we do not feel good or good enough about the truths that the Catholic Church teaches.
"Faith enables us to know God as He knows Himself, although certainly not exhaustively. By faith we know creatures as He knows them, that is, in relation to Him and dependent upon Him. Our Intellect can give us only natural light about God and creatures; faith, on the contrary, gives us the supernatural light that is a participation in the light of God, in the knowledge of God Himself and of creatures."
