The First to Shed Their Blood

This captivating book delves into the lives of six extraordinary men who shaped the Catholic Church through their unwavering devotion and sacrifice. Building on the author's previous exploration of the Twelve Apostles, this work brings to light the heroic lives of Stephen, Mark, Barnabas, Timothy, Paul, and Luke.

Readers will be drawn into earliest days of the Church as they discover:

  • The unique bond between Stephen, Mark, and Barnabas - early disciples who knew Jesus personally and shared a deep connection with His mother Mary.
  • The remarkable journeys of Timothy, Paul, and Luke - converts who never met Jesus in person but became pivotal figures in spreading the Gospel.
  • Vivid accounts of how these men boldly preached the Gospel across the classical world, facing persecution and ultimately martyrdom.
  • A powerful reminder of the foundations of the Catholic Faith and the price paid by its earliest adherents.
  • The sobering reality of what it truly costs to be a Catholic in a hostile world.

This book is both a historical treasure and a source of spiritual inspiration. It challenges readers to examine their own faith in light of these exemplary lives and encourages them to stand firm in their beliefs.

This work is perfect for both history enthusiasts and those interested in the roots of Catholicism.

An uplifting read

Ellie Christie’s First Century Early Martyrs is at once devotional and deeply informative. Mrs. Christie goes beyond the too trite recounting of saintly lives in the most satisfying way. She weaves together the stories from the New Testament with just enough historical detail to enrich the reader’s understanding and appreciation of them. Yet the intellectual enrichment is surpassed by the sense of devotion that the author so clearly holds for these holy men. The reader is elevated by her reverent language, which turns the act of reading into an act of prayer.

It was an informative book.

My 11 year old son liked the martyr stories. How everyone lived and died. Thé chapters were just the right size. It took him 2 weeks to read it. Everyday 15 min. Many good examples.

Short but informative book

Many finer details about the early martyrs that I never knew, all packaged in an engaging and pleasant prose.
