“There is a world where culture does not cast its treasures away as ballast in pursuit of novelty. A world where the elevation of virtue still forms the foundation of public life. Where society still perceives itself as the People of God, bound together by threads of brotherhood. In this world, history is celebrated in songs of shared origin and purpose, and life on Earth is regarded as an adventure. Here, liturgy is still considered to be the highest social act and the culmination of all common efforts in service to God. This world exists here and now, in the nooks of old houses, in secluded attics, beneath our feet. Inhabited by mouse princes, priests, ladies and knights, it opens itself to the reader, young and old, in the first tale from the Holy Roman Empire of Mice.”

“God spoke to the Mouse King Ailill, “Everywhere I have sent my servants, a fragrant smell of offerings rises to me, but why cannot I smell the same burnt grains and meats from your land?”
The King replied, “Lord, you are the Lord of creation and you do not pay attention to burnt offerings. Look instead at our bellies, how big and round they have grown. Have we not made ourselves more beautiful by eating and using the things you have given us to govern? Have we not grown beyond what you created us to be and have we not paid homage to you in this manner?” God became angry and said to the Mouse King “Because you wanted to praise me not according to what I commanded you, but you decided to shape your prayer in your own image and likeness, I will send a flood to destroy your nation, for there is not a single servant of mine among you.” The Mouse King became terrified and suddenly felt a longing for the heavenly mountain.”
