The Last Things in the Psalms

Fr. Patrick Troadec, SSPX

"I remembered, O Lord, Thy judgements of old, and I was comforted." - Psalm 118:52

“Every verse of the Psalms by itself is enough to raise us to an eminent degree of wisdom, to reform our ideas, and to obtain very great advantages for us. If we meditate attentively on each of the words of which they are composed, we will gather very abundant fruits from them.” - St. John Chrysostom

This valuable book focuses on the profound image of a virtuous death as presented in the Psalms. The death of a just man represents the death we all aspire to achieve. We must learn to die well, and the surest way to do so is to practice daily the art of living well. As Fr. Patrick Troadec observes, “The death of the impenitent sinner incites us to lead a virtuous life and to flee sin, which is the only real evil.” Join in the profound Catholic discipline of keeping death before our eyes so that when our time comes to meet God, we can do so in the peace of a long-anticipated reunion rather than the dread of the Final Judgment. Ours is the kingdom of heaven if only we take the time now to live in the light of its existence. Every Catholic will benefit from this book. Contemplating the Psalms

The Four Last Things: death, judgment, heaven or hell. The reader is invited to contemplate the psalms based upon these themes. The psalm is given in both Latin and English, with an explanation relating to it. Although not an exhaustive expose, the sources quoted are from the saints and other learned authors of the religious life, providing abundant food for meditation.

I was drawn to purchase this book because I have begun to love the psalms, and Fr. Patrick Troadec has become a favorite author for me. His writing is relatable to the average reader, and not so esoteric that it is beyond comprehension.

I recommend this book for those wishing to meditate upon the Four Last Things, and as a beautiful introduction to the Psalms. Appropriate for any time of the year, and especially Lent.
