What a story! Fr. Pierre De Smet (1801-1873) is mentioned in U.S. history books almost as a footnote, but there was in the mid-19th century America no single person the American Indians trusted as they did this Jesuit Priest. He was "more powerful than an army" at a huge treaty conference of U.S. officials and the Western Indian nations near Laramie in 1851, and he was the chief negotiator at another, with the Sioux, in 1868.

It is better than a James Fennimore Cooper novel because it is a true story of the miraculous conversion of Indian Tribes all across the Northwestern United States by a man who covered over 6 thousand miles on foot, horseback, boat, and canoe. God protected this man through many dangers including hostile Indians. Father De Smet was an example of true devotion to the conversion of souls because he knew if they were not converted and baptized they would be lost to hell. God put in motion His plan for the conversion of the Americas through Jesuits who preceded Father De Smet like Father Jean de Brbeuf and others who evangelized to the Huron and Iroquois tribes on the east coast. These Iroquois then brought the Catholic Faith to the Indians of the west and gave them a thirst for God's truth which they sought out in the Black Robes (Catholic Priests).
