According to a number of reliable sources, Fr. Federico Lombardi, the head of the Vatican Press Office, issued the following statement two days ago: “It is a good thing for the child to know that he has a father and a mother” and that it should be “made clear that matrimony between a man and a woman is a specific and fundamental institution in the history of mankind. This does not prevent that other forms of union between two persons may be recognized.”
What are we to make of this? First, let us state that Fr. Lombardi has a history of making statements outside of his mission, and above, so to speak, his pay grade. That being said, they must be corrected, since the clear impression given to the larger Catholic world is that Fr. Lombardi speaks for the Pope, or at least for “the Vatican.” Along these lines, let us remember that Pope Francis is an incredibly hands-on pope, who seems to have the willingness to take on subordinates when necessary. Let us wait and see what he does here.
The purpose of this brief post is not to discuss whether or not Pope Francis knows about this, or whether or not he’ll do anything; it’s to discuss the item in question.
First, if anyone entertains the notion that this statement refers to “other forms of union between” a man and a woman, let them dispel that notion. This is clearly a contentious issue and if Fr. Lombardi wanted to make that statement, he would have done so clearly. His reference to “two persons” seems especially clear when contrasted with his previous reference to “a father and a mother” and then “a man and a woman.” What we are talking about here is the recognition, on a civil level, of an unnatural and sodomitic relationship.
For modern man, we discuss rights over and over again, but little grasp the meaning of the term. Any rights that we have are subordinate rights; that is they are rights we receive because they are necessary, in a subordinate and secondary way, to the rights of Almighty God. Thus we have a right to sound doctrine, or to the traditional liturgy, precisely because Almighty God has a right to our service and love, “in spirit and in truth.”
Now, in the case of perversion, and perversion of this level, we may not speak of rights at all. It is true, certainly, that the State may find it necessary to tolerate this grave evil for the sake of the common good, but never that the Church ceases to oppose this evil, and to point out that a society in such circumstances is at the end of its life, and will soon go over the precipice.
Be it Fr. Lombardi or the many other voices in the Church which are at least open to the recognition of these “civil unions” we hear not a peep about their (civil unions) wickedness. Instead, we once more see the men in the Church bending themselves to the powers of this world of darkness so that we may continue to be “relevant” and “up-to-date.”
It is not in being relevant that we will reconquer the world for Christ. It is not in being relevant to the modern world concerning a grave sin crying to Heaven for vengeance that we will convince the world of the truth, goodness, and beauty of chaste love. As we stated yesterday, it is only in a return to sound doctrine and practice that the Church will appear to men what she truly is: a city set on a hill who exists for the salvation of men.
